Green Roof Over Concrete and Glass with Views of Mývatn Nature

Project in-detail

With a green roof that enhances ecological sustainability, combined with a robust concrete and glass structure that offers views of the Mývatn Nature Bath, the facility serves as both a greenhouse and dining space for visitors.
5 key facts about this project
01
Green roof spans the entire parking area, enhancing ecological benefits and visual aesthetics.
02
The basement greenhouse is directly connected to the dining area, promoting a unique dining experience.
03
Expansive glass walls maximize natural light while framing scenic views of the Mývatn landscape.
04
Two distinct parking zones optimize access for different visitor types, enhancing functionality.
05
The building's form reflects local geological features, creating a contextual relationship with the landscape.

The Iceland Greenhouse Restaurant presents a unique setting surrounded by the natural beauty of Iceland. Serving as both a dining space and greenhouse, it offers visitors an opportunity to experience the local landscape. The design concept is rooted in the geography of the area, aiming to create a building that harmonizes with the striking features of the environment while catering to the needs of its guests.

Architectural Integration

The building is carefully integrated into the terrain. By positioning it in a way that shields views of the parking lot, the design highlights important natural landmarks such as the Mývatn Nature Bath and Hverfjal volcano. This thoughtful approach allows the structure to feel like part of the landscape, enhancing the visitor experience through its connection to the surroundings.

Spatial Organization

The restaurant consists of four levels. The basement contains the greenhouse and restaurant facilities, making efficient use of space while connecting visitors with nature. The restaurant occupies a distinct level and is linked to the greenhouse, forming a continuous environment where dining and nature coexist.

Material Expression

Concrete, glass, and steel form the key materials of the Iceland Greenhouse Restaurant. Concrete is used for its strength and durability, supporting the overall structure. Glass is incorporated to bring natural light into the interior spaces, promoting an inviting atmosphere while connecting guests to the outdoors. Steel components offer the necessary support for the innovative design, accommodating the functions of the building.

Access and Observation

Visitor access is managed through a divided parking area. One part accommodates bus parking, ensuring easy entry through the greenhouse to the restaurant. Centrally located, the green roof serves both sustainable functions and as an observation area. This elevated space invites guests to take in the expansive views of the landscape, enhancing their connection with the environment.

Incorporating these elements, the design allows natural light to fill the space, creating a calm ambiance that reflects the serene beauty of the Icelandic terrain.
