The design is located in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve in Latvia, an area recognized by UNESCO as the country’s first biosphere reserve. The project reuses an existing school building, addressing the site’s ecological context while introducing a versatile facility for educational, artistic, and hospitality purposes. The overall design focuses on creating distinct functional areas that enhance flexibility and cater to diverse user needs.

Site Integration and Landscape Design

The approach maximizes the relationship between the built environment and the natural landscape. The building’s placement encourages visitor interaction with the surrounding greenery. The main entrance leads into a spacious lobby, which offers a view of the restaurant area through large windows. This design choice fosters a connection to nature, making the transition between indoor and outdoor spaces more inviting.

Functional Layout and Accessibility

Inside, the building features clearly defined areas for various activities, including an auditorium, artistic spaces, and hotel rooms. This layout ensures smooth movement throughout the facility while accommodating many different events. Accessibility is an essential aspect of the design. All public areas are navigable for individuals with disabilities, integrating features such as ramps and accessible restrooms to ensure everyone can use the space comfortably.

Sustainability and Materiality

The design emphasizes sustainability through thoughtful material choices and eco-friendly strategies. Where possible, local materials are used to strengthen the connection to the environment. Biologically active areas and ecological sidewalk flooring are incorporated to promote environmental health. The building also includes a mechanical ventilation system with recuperation, aimed at improving energy efficiency and aligning with contemporary eco-conscious standards.

Natural light plays an important role in the design, with large windows allowing sunlight to fill the interior. This choice creates a pleasant atmosphere in the various functional areas while reinforcing the connection to the biosphere. The careful arrangement of spaces and consideration for light contribute to a comfortable environment that enhances the experience for every visitor.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
