The Iceland Movie Pavilion is a well-designed space aimed at serving the local community and visitors. Located in Iceland, it functions as a cinema and a gathering place. The design focuses on user experience while also being in harmony with the natural surroundings. The overall concept is to create a layout that is functional, inviting, and environmentally conscious.

Site Organization

The site plan features a thoughtful arrangement of elements, including a parking lot for visitor convenience. The entrance is open and inviting, setting the tone for what lies within. At the heart of the pavilion is the cinema hall, designed to offer an engaging viewing experience. Surrounding this central space are a counter, bar, and kitchen, which enhance the overall usability of the pavilion.

Social Spaces

One of the key areas in the pavilion is the lounge. This space encourages social interactions among visitors, allowing them to gather before or after films. It contributes to a sense of community, where people can connect over shared interests. The strategic placement of the lounge within the layout ensures it is easily accessible to all guests, reinforcing its importance within the overall design.

Environmental Considerations

Environmental sustainability plays a significant role in the design, highlighted by the implementation of a green roof. This feature helps regulate interior temperatures and reduces heat buildup. Beyond its functional benefits, the green roof also fosters biodiversity, providing a habitat for plants and possibly small animals. It can also serve as a recreational area for visitors, promoting a deeper relationship with the landscape.

Spatial Relationships

Examining sections A-A and B-B shows how different spaces interact within the pavilion. There is a clear spatial hierarchy that aids in the flow of visitors while allowing for natural light to enter. Elevation views offer a glimpse into the building’s form and style, revealing how it fits within the surrounding environment and landscape. The balance between built areas and open spaces invites a connection with nature.

The design of the Iceland Movie Pavilion reflects an understanding of community needs and environmental responsibility. With careful attention to the organization of spaces and the integration of green elements, it creates a meaningful place for cultural experiences. The thoughtful arrangement encourages exploration and interaction, emphasizing the role of shared environments in fostering connection.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
