Cottage Core is an initiative that seeks to tackle the important issue of housing affordability for lower and middle-class families. Situated in an urban environment where such living options are limited, the design focuses on creating a compact and useful space. It is framed as an “indoor fort for a fixer-upper,” which highlights its flexibility and adaptability as essential aspects of its overall concept.

Functionality

The design prioritizes functionality by including essential areas for cooking, working, sleeping, and relaxing within a small area. A Murphy bed serves dual purposes, acting as both a sleeping space and a desk, enabling efficient use of the limited living space. Alongside this, a built-in closet provides necessary storage without taking away from the overall room. The kitchen is well-equipped and features extendable counter space to support various cooking tasks, emphasizing how practical and user-friendly the design is.

Sustainability

Sustainability plays a significant role in the overall design. The structure includes a tankless electric water heater and an electric generator, both of which support energy efficiency. An air-sealed utility connection box with a flashing membrane and solar panels enhance energy management as well. These features reflect a clear intention to minimize environmental impact while meeting the needs of modern living.

Water Management

Effective water management solutions are also a key focus of Cottage Core. The dwelling is designed with water storage options, promoting conservation and efficient use of resources. There is a system for collecting graywater, which can be reused for irrigation, helping to create a self-sufficient living environment. This attention to water management aligns with ecological principles and underscores the aim of fostering more sustainable practices within residential living.

Greenhouse Component

A notable aspect of Cottage Core is its greenhouse that includes composting capabilities, reinforcing the idea of sustainable living. This encourages residents to grow their own food, further supporting environmental responsibility. By combining opportunities for gardening with the living space, Cottage Core fosters a meaningful connection between people and their environment, promoting both independence and community involvement.

Finished with practical design elements, such as a rolling ladder for accessing entertainment spaces, Cottage Core offers a thoughtful response to the challenges of modern housing. It emphasizes adaptability and sustainability, creating a living environment that is both functional and aware of its ecological footprint.
