Gray Bricks and Metal Plates Reflecting Identity in a Memorial Space

Project in-detail

Gray bricks and etched metal plates create a solemn memorial space that facilitates contemplation of genocide, inviting visitors to engage with the complex narratives of identity and loss.
5 key facts about this project
01
Gray bricks in the northern façade symbolize the solemnity of the oppressed.
02
Metal plates etched with victims' profiles serve as a reminder of individual identities lost.
03
The design incorporates separate pathways for the oppressor and oppressed to illustrate their contrasting narratives.
04
Visitors descend into a dark chamber, immersing them in the experience of loss and oppression.
05
A spiral staircase leads to a viewing platform, maintaining a visual connection between the two paths.

The design engages with themes of genocide by exploring the processes of deprivation and the loss of identities. Located within a reflective environment, the approach combines elements of memory and interactivity, encouraging visitors to consider historical atrocities in a meaningful way. The concept emphasizes the complex relationship between the oppressor and the oppressed, guiding individuals through narratives that resonate with both groups’ experiences.

Spatial Organization

The layout features two distinct quadrants: one that represents the oppressed and another that embodies the oppressor. This separation creates a clear contrast in visitor experiences. The pathway for the oppressed leads them down into a dark chamber, symbolizing the burden of suffering and loss. This descent fosters an immersive engagement with narratives of oppression. In contrast, the pathway for the oppressor rises towards a lighter area, allowing visitors to reflect on differing perspectives in a thought-provoking manner.

Materiality

The northern façade utilizes gray bricks, which evoke a sense of solemnity and respect. This choice reinforces the themes of loss and memory that are central to the design. In the southern area, metal plates etched with the profiles of individual victims serve to honor their identities. The contrast between these materials highlights the distinction in experiences, emphasizing both the complexity and the individuality of those affected by genocide.

Interactivity and Connection

Movement through the site encourages visitor interaction with the thematic elements. The design allows for a journey that begins in darkness and culminates at a viewing platform, creating a layered experience. Although the paths remain separate, there are visual and vocal connections, encouraging contemplation of the intertwining narratives. This structure promotes reflection on the nature of both the oppressor's and the oppressed's experiences without merging the two paths.

Light and shadow play an important role throughout the design. Natural light enters the dark chamber, contrasting with deeper tones and enhancing the emotional weight of the space. This interplay serves to symbolize hope amidst despair, enriching the visitor experience while deepening their engagement with the themes woven into the design. Each element combines to create a powerful and thought-provoking environment.
