Grapevine-Inspired Pavilion Featuring Azulejos and Sustainable Concrete

Project in-detail

Inspired by the shape of a grape and adorned with traditional azulejos, the underground wine pavilion integrates sustainable concrete construction to create an inviting space for wine tasting amidst the surrounding vineyards.
5 key facts about this project
01
Inspired by the silhouette of a grape, the pavilion's unique oval shape connects architecture to viticulture.
02
The interior features a communal vine-shaped table designed for social interaction, accommodating up to 30 guests.
03
Azulejos cover the walls, enhancing the cultural connection to Portuguese heritage throughout the space.
04
Sustainable concrete blocks provide structural integrity while minimizing the environmental impact of construction.
05
Grapevines grow over a pergola, integrating natural elements into the architecture and offering shade for outdoor activities.

UVA DA TERRA presents a thoughtful solution that combines a wine pavilion with its beautiful surroundings. Located among rolling vineyards, the design focuses on offering visitors impressive views while providing a memorable wine-tasting experience. The underground structure not only reduces visual disruption but also enhances energy efficiency. The form of the building reflects local viticulture influences, establishing a connection to the identity of the winery.

Shape and Form

The pavilion features an oval design inspired by the shape of a grape. This choice links the building to the winery’s branding and the natural setting. Large windows, complete with sliding doors, create strong connections between the inside and outside, allowing guests to enjoy expansive views of the hillside while sipping wine.

Spatial Configuration

The interior is designed for gathering. A vine-shaped table can accommodate about 30 guests, encouraging social interaction and providing flexibility for smaller groups when needed. A staircase leads visitors to the pavilion, providing an accessible transition and reinforcing the bond with the surrounding landscape.

Cultural Elements

Inside, the walls are decorated with azulejos, traditional Portuguese tiles that add a cultural touch. These tiles enhance the visual experience and help connect the building to the local heritage. Outside, grapevines grow over a pergola, bringing natural elements into the structure. This not only offers shade but also adds to the overall aesthetic.

Materials and Sustainability

Construction involves sustainable concrete blocks that focus on reducing environmental impact. The use of prefabricated concrete for the balcony further supports sustainable practices, ensuring the building remains durable and minimizes its carbon footprint. These material choices reflect a commitment to environmentally responsible building while also ensuring the right conditions for wine storage.

As visitors enter, they find themselves at the vine-shaped table, an invitation to share wine and conversation amidst the rich textures of the azulejos. The design fosters an engaging environment, drawing on the heritage of the vineyard to enhance every aspect of the experience.
