The columbarium in the forest cemetery of Riga, Latvia, offers a thoughtful approach to themes of memory and loss. Set against a natural landscape, it serves as a space for quiet reflection, allowing visitors to connect with loved ones who have passed away. The design emphasizes a journey from life to death through its layout, guiding users along a path that integrates the architecture with its surroundings.

Design Concept

The columbarium is aligned along a north-south axis, symbolizing the transition from life to death. This layout encourages movement within the landscape, inviting visitors to explore both physically and emotionally. The design fosters a sense of introspection, helping individuals navigate their feelings about loss in a serene environment.

Materiality

The structure features a series of concrete canopies that blend into the landscape. These canopies are functional as well as beautiful, providing shelter while enhancing the overall experience of the space. Interconnected memory brackets organize the canopies, creating areas that encourage contemplation. Granite lines these canopies, connecting the design to the earth and providing a lasting presence on the site.

Spatial Experience

Natural light is a significant element in the design, with carefully placed openings that allow sunlight to fill the interior spaces. This use of light highlights the structure's walls and creates a calming atmosphere. As visitors move through the columbarium, they engage with their emotions while experiencing the gentle play of light and shadow that enhances their time in the space.

Detailing

The layout of the columbarium includes an external low wall accompanied by a raised internal wall. This design feature provides a physical guide for visitors as they navigate their journey. It reflects shared memories and frames the experience of loss. The combination of these elements encourages reflection and connection, creating inviting areas where one can pause and contemplate within the peaceful landscape.
