The Monte D'Oiro Wine Tasting Room is located in Alenquer, Portugal, surrounded by picturesque vineyards that contribute to its unique setting. The design combines the processes of growing grapes with the art of winemaking, providing a space for visitors to experience wine tasting in a meaningful way. The concept highlights the connection between the historical aspects of winemaking and the enjoyment it brings, creating an environment that emphasizes both heritage and modernity.

Grounded Structure

A heavy stone cellar serves as the core of the building, instilling a strong sense of permanence. Constructed from locally-sourced granite, the cellar reflects the region’s rich geological history and acts as a reminder of the earth from which wine comes. Inside, wine racks built into the stone walls display a selection of the winery's collection, inviting guests to connect with the space and its story.

Airy Tasting Room

In contrast to the cellar, the tasting room is bright and open, using engineered timber to create a light atmosphere. This space accommodates a range of visitors, from individuals to large groups, enhancing the experience of tasting wine. Large windows let in natural light and frame beautiful views of the vineyards, making the connection to nature a central part of the experience.

Dynamic Circulation

Two main access points lead to the tasting room. One route includes a staircase that connects to a southeast terrace and descends into the vineyard. This layout encourages visitors to walk through the landscape, fostering a deeper interaction with the natural world. The use of the site's elevation adds a sense of discovery, guiding guests on an engaging journey from the outdoors to the interior spaces.

Elevated Perspectives

Inside, the arrangement of spaces creates a clear structure that separates tasting areas from storage and educational zones. A grand staircase leads to a roof deck, providing visitors with expansive views of the surrounding vineyards. This design element allows the interior and the landscape to remain connected, offering a visual relationship that enhances the overall experience.

The centerpiece of the tasting room is a large table designed to accommodate varied group sizes. This detail encourages conversation among guests and highlights the communal spirit of sharing wine. It serves as a focal point, promoting interaction while also celebrating the natural surroundings that define the Monte D'Oiro experience.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
