The Bedouin Stellariums project is located in the vast Arabian Desert, specifically in the Empty Quarter, an area known for its challenging and beautiful landscape. The design aims to provide living spaces that resonate with the environment while serving the needs of the people who inhabit them. The structures take inspiration from traditional Bedouin tents, creating a dialogue between old and new while addressing practical requirements.

Structural Design

The architecture features dune-shaped forms that respond to the harsh conditions of the desert. These shapes are effective in deflecting wind and reducing the buildup of sand. The interiors are organized around a miniature sahn, promoting easy movement and interaction among occupants. This arrangement allows for both communal spaces and areas for privacy, catering to various social dynamics.

Material Choices

Materials play an important role in the effectiveness of the design. Goat hair fabric serves as the outer layer, providing passive cooling during hot days and expanding when it rains to keep the interior dry. Lightweight aluminum poles support these structures, forming a modular system that makes assembly simple and efficient. Three-dimensional printed components are included, showcasing modern techniques that allow for customizable construction.

Environmental Considerations

Within the structures, translucent layers work to enhance both light quality and comfort. These materials reflect natural light into the interiors while minimizing dust infiltration from the outside. Openings at the top of the tents enable hot air to escape, contributing to natural ventilation. By carefully addressing the relationship between the living spaces and their environment, the design promotes comfort and functionality.

Experiencing the Space

At night, the roofs become a focal point, allowing residents to gaze at the stars. The low emissivity coatings help maintain a comfortable temperature inside while providing an unobstructed view of the night sky. This feature encourages a deeper connection with the vast desert landscape. The design successfully balances cultural heritage with modern needs, offering a unique living experience that respects its context.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
