The EuroVelo cabin is an innovative design that addresses the needs of cyclists while promoting sustainable living practices. Located along the EuroVelo cycling routes, the cabin integrates the elements of bicycle culture into its overall design. It is structured to be modular, allowing for flexibility in its use and adaptation to different settings. The main concept revolves around using components from bicycles, which influences not only the appearance but also the functionality of the cabin.

Modular Structure

The cabin consists of three distinct modules, each designed for specific uses. Module A includes areas for lounging, dining, personal storage, bicycle repairs, and sleeping. This layout is intended to accommodate a range of activities throughout the day. Modules B and C support this functionality by offering sheltered bicycle storage, a raised terrace, and essential facilities like a WC, shower, and sink. This arrangement allows users to tailor their experience according to their needs and the location of the cabin.

Form and Aesthetics

The overall shape of the cabin is inspired by the profile of a bicycle rim. This design choice not only adds a unique visual element but also provides structural stability. The aesthetic identity is consistent across various cabin types and promotes a modern understanding of how buildings can work with their surroundings. The facade adapts to local conditions and is designed to blend in with the environment while reflecting the characteristics of a bicycle tire.

Construction and Assembly

The construction process focuses on efficiency through prefabrication. The cabin is assembled off-site and delivered as a kit of parts, which simplifies on-site construction. This approach is similar to how a bicycle is put together, speeding up the building process and reducing waste. Each A-frame is supported by steel footings that can adjust to various terrains, enhancing stability and lowering environmental impact.

Materials and Details

The EuroVelo cabin makes use of several carefully selected materials that support its design and functionality. Plywood, insulation, glulam A-frame profiles, timber battens, and a breather membrane are some of the key components. The external skin is selected based on local conditions, allowing for adaptability. Additional features such as rooflights and retractable bed systems create a comfortable and versatile living space. This focus on material choices ensures the cabin is not only functional but also harmonizes with its environment, offering a practical solution for modern living.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
