Aperture is a guesthouse located in Iceland, designed to connect with the region's striking landscapes shaped by glaciers and geological movements. Drawing inspiration from the Mid Atlantic Ridge, the building features a triangular prismatic shape that reflects the area's unique characteristics. The design focuses on creating an environment for visitors to relax while also enjoying social interactions with others, emphasizing the connection between the indoor space and the natural surroundings.

Geometric Form and Spatial Organization

The layout clearly separates public and private areas, using a central corridor to guide movement and foster interaction among guests. This corridor is flanked by an outdoor hot tub and shared kitchen and living spaces, inviting people to gather and mingle. The arrangement of these areas draws from the idea of diverging tectonic plates, symbolizing the natural processes that shape the landscape.

Bedrooms are placed at the edges of the guesthouse for privacy, ensuring that guests have a personal space to retreat to after socializing. Each room features practical elements, such as luggage storage underneath the stair landing and fixed furniture like benches and shelves. Slanted glazing panels above the beds allow for views of the night sky, enhancing the connection to the natural environment and providing a unique experience for visitors.

Light and Transparency

The design incorporates structural glass roofs and walls as key elements, allowing natural light to flood the interior spaces. This choice creates a sense of openness and helps establish a strong link between the inside of the guesthouse and the surrounding landscape. It mirrors the historical glacial formations of the area, offering a space where guests can immerse themselves in nature and the outdoors.

Observation and Adaptability

Observation decks are positioned alongside the hot tub, providing impressive views of Mount Vinbelgur. This feature underscores the relationship between the guesthouse and its beautiful surroundings, enabling guests to appreciate the landscape from different perspectives. The observation decks are also designed with roller doors, allowing them to be enclosed during winter months, which demonstrates the flexibility of the design to adapt to seasonal changes while still encouraging a connection to the outside.

The interior is characterized by honed basalt flooring that connects well with the natural environment. In the bathrooms and hot tub areas, the choice of green quartzite adds both visual appeal and functionality, complementing the design's overall focus on light, transparency, and harmony with nature. Each detail has been carefully considered to enhance the experience of staying in this guesthouse, allowing visitors to feel at home in the beauty of Iceland.
