Iceland's Garden and Viewpoint Restaurant is located between the Mývatn natural baths and the Hverfjall volcano. The design focuses on connecting visitors to the surrounding landscape while providing a functional space to enjoy local food. With a clear commitment to transparency and interaction, the restaurant immerses guests in both the culinary and visual elements of its striking setting.

Architectural Concept

The concept prioritizes creating moments of connection between visitors and the unique Icelandic scenery. The restaurant features a series of interconnected spaces that guide guests through thematic gardens. These gardens illustrate the sources of the fresh produce served, promoting awareness of local farming practices. This engaging approach allows visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the environment and the food they consume.

Materials and Integration

Material choices play a vital role in enhancing the relationship between the restaurant and its natural surroundings. Large windows invite abundant light indoors and provide views of the landscape. Steel and apparent concrete give the building strength while allowing it to adapt to seasonal changes. This selection of materials complements the aesthetic of the area and supports the building's overall functionality.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the restaurant employs lattices and vegetation to define spaces, fostering a blend of openness and privacy. This layout accommodates different activities, whether dining or hosting events like movie nights and yoga classes. The thoughtful arrangement of spaces keeps the interiors engaging, enabling guests to feel a connection to the outdoors even while inside the building.

Environmental Considerations

The south-facing solarium is a key design feature that collects sunlight effectively, adding warmth during colder periods. This passive solar design approach reduces the need for artificial heating, highlighting the project’s dedication to sustainability. Such choices enhance comfort for visitors while ensuring that the building respects its environmental context.

One notable design detail is the extensive glazing that allows visitors to enjoy unobstructed views of the northern lights. This feature deepens engagement with the site and enhances the overall experience of dining in this remarkable location.
