Meia Lua Yoga Shala is located in a peaceful mountain forest surrounded by tall pine trees. Designed as a space for yoga practice, the building accommodates 36 participants, effectively doubling the capacity of the previous facility. The overall concept emphasizes creating a comfortable environment that encourages community and connection with nature.

Architecture Concept

The design features a half-moon shape that allows for interaction among participants. This layout lets everyone engage more easily with the instructor and with one another. The structure sits slightly elevated, adapting to the steep terrain while limiting disruption to the landscape. This thoughtful approach demonstrates a commitment to sustainable design by minimizing the ecological impact of construction.

Materials and Construction

Wood, stone, and glass are key components of the shala’s construction. Mass timber columns and beams are connected without glue, showcasing an innovative building technique. This method supports the structural reliability and makes future reassembly possible, reinforcing sustainability. The warm-colored stone used for the exterior walls adds visual appeal and helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature throughout the year.

Environmental Performance

The design incorporates various features to support environmental performance. Solar panels generate energy for the building, while a rainwater collection system efficiently manages resources. This system gathers rainwater in a hidden tank, which can be used for drinking, showers, and irrigation, thus reducing the building’s overall environmental impact.

Facilities and User Experience

Amenities include showers and toilets located at the entry, along with a small kitchenette for serving refreshments. An outdoor balcony on the west side expands the available space and offers scenic views of the valley. The design utilizes large windows, creating a clear connection between the interior and the natural surroundings. This enhances the experience for users, promoting relaxation in a calm environment.

A centrally located fireplace serves as a gathering point during colder months, providing warmth and encouraging interaction among participants. This element helps create an inviting atmosphere that aligns with the core principles of yoga while respecting the beauty of the natural setting.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
