Glazed Prism Structure with Panoramic Terraces Overlooking Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

The glazed prism structure, defined by panoramic terraces that frame views of Hverfjall and Dimmuborgir, serves as a Visitor Center, fostering a deep engagement with the dramatic volcanic landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Glazed prism structure maximizes natural light and landscape views.
02
Panoramic terraces offer distinct vistas of Hverfjall and Dimmuborgir.
03
Design minimizes environmental impact with a lightweight footprint.

Four structural columns create an open, uninterrupted interior space.
05
Utilizes local geothermal and micro-wind energy solutions.

The Visitor Center is located in a landscape defined by significant geological features, specifically Hverfjall and Dimmuborgir. As a hub for visitors, the center provides opportunities to explore and appreciate the natural environment. The design concept focuses on integrating the building into its surroundings, creating a space that complements the beauty of the landscape while serving to inform and engage visitors.

Architectural Concept

The design responds directly to the topography, with the building's form shaped to reflect the volcanic landscape. The roof follows the outline of Hverfjall, establishing a visual connection between the structure and the natural features it is set within. The facades are carefully positioned to enhance views of the landscape, allowing visitors to engage meaningfully with their surroundings.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the Visitor Center offers a dynamic, open area contained within a glazed structure that provides broad views of the external landscape. This configuration allows for a smooth flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. By avoiding traditional walls and ceilings, the design maintains an open feel while inviting natural light in and connecting visitors with the nature outside.

Sustainability Considerations

A focus on sustainability is evident throughout the design. The building is constructed to minimize environmental impact, resting lightly on the site. Energy efficiency is a key priority, with systems such as geothermal and micro-wind energy utilized to fulfill heating and power requirements. This approach illustrates a commitment to environmentally responsible design.

Material Selection

Steel and wood are the primary materials used in the construction of the Visitor Center. These materials provide the necessary durability and strength while also allowing the building to fit comfortably into the natural environment. Their selection reflects a thoughtful consideration of both aesthetics and functionality.

Large panoramic terraces provide inviting views of the Dimmuborgir rock formations and Hverfjall volcano, encouraging visitors to immerse themselves in the surrounding landscape. These terraces create gathering spaces that enhance the overall visitor experience, allowing moments of reflection and connection with nature.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
