The Great Kemeri Bog Visitor Center is located in the Latvian landscape, designed to support visitor needs while respecting the unique ecology of Kemeri Bog. The structure serves mainly to educate and engage visitors about the natural environment. The design concept, "Field and Form," seeks to blend the building with its natural surroundings, emphasizing a relationship between architecture and the landscape.

Massing Strategy

The center uses an aggregated gable form that allows it to stand out in the environment. Three staggered linear volumes compose the building, creating visual connections to the nearby forest. This arrangement allows natural light to enter and creates a sense of openness. The design maximizes energy efficiency by carefully considering the relationship between interior space and exterior surfaces.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the layout is clear and straightforward. Key areas include ticketing and information, restrooms, a café, exhibition spaces, and outdoor terraces. This organization helps visitors navigate the center easily, encouraging them to explore both the exhibits and the surrounding nature. The interconnected spaces promote visibility and openness, enhancing the experience as visitors transition from one area to another.

Material Selection

The choice of materials plays an important role in the overall design. Vertical pine cladding and horizontal wood battens form the exterior walls, contributing to the building's thermal efficiency. Rigid insulation and mineral wool cavity insulation add to the energy-saving features. Large areas of insulated glass allow for extensive views of the bog, linking the inside of the building to the natural world outside.

Exhibition Space

The northeast corner of the building features the exhibition area, which provides clear views of the forest. This design decision supports the educational goal of the center, as it encourages visitors to connect with the landscape. Natural light fills the exhibition space, enriching the visitor's experience by bringing a sense of the outdoors inside. This connection enhances the opportunity for exploration and reflection as guests interact with both the exhibits and the environment.

The design captures the essence of the Kemeri Bog, inviting visitors to learn and experience the natural beauty that surrounds them.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
