Glass Roof and Black Metal Embrace in a Sustainable Greenhouse

Project in-detail

A black metal base supports a greenhouse with a glass roof that captures natural light, creating an ideal environment for growing local produce while offering expansive views of the surrounding Icelandic landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
A glass roof provides maximum sunlight for plant cultivation year-round.
02
The structure is elevated on a black metal base that harmonizes with the volcanic soil.
03
Concrete walls mimic natural terrain, enhancing the connection to the landscape.
04
Outdoor stairways lead to viewpoints for observing the surrounding scenery.
05
Locally sourced produce is grown and prepared on-site for visitor meals.

The Mývatn Green Shelter is located in Iceland on a hill that overlooks the Hverfjall volcano and the milky blue waters of the Mývatn Nature Baths. Designed as a greenhouse, it emphasizes a connection to the natural landscape while providing a comfortable space for visitors to enjoy. The design focuses on harmony with the site and the use of natural light, creating a welcoming atmosphere for both people and plants.

Architecture Concept

The design responds directly to the local topography, allowing the building to integrate into the landscape. Varying heights throughout the structure create a fluid form that mirrors the contours of the land. Visitors are guided by the architecture to appreciate both the building and the dramatic natural features surrounding it.

Materiality

Material choices are practical and functional, enhancing the shelter’s purpose. The upper part of the building uses wood and glass, promoting visibility and creating a connection with nature. Light pours in through these materials, supporting plant growth inside and giving the space a warm feel. A black metal base grounds the structure in the volcanic soil, connecting it firmly to its setting.

User Experience

The Mývatn Green Shelter offers more than just a greenhouse. Concrete walls and floors create an experience similar to walking through natural terrain. Outdoor spaces invite interaction, including a stairway that leads to a viewpoint, allowing visitors to take in expansive scenery. Each element encourages connection with the magnificent landscape.

Design Detail

A key feature of the shelter is its ability to grow local produce and prepare meals from those ingredients. This practical aspect deepens the relationship between visitors and the local environment. The combination of bright lighting, flourishing plants, and sweeping views fosters a unique space that celebrates the natural beauty of Iceland.
