The restaurant-greenhouse is located at the base of Hverfjall Volcano, overlooking the Mývatn Nature Baths in Iceland. This location provides an excellent backdrop, allowing the building to blend with the natural surroundings while serving the various needs of its visitors. The design focuses on transparency and integration, allowing the structure to rise from the landscape in a way that is both respectful and functional.

Design Concept and Spatial Organization

The main idea behind the building’s design is to create a strong connection between the architecture and the environment. This is accomplished with a low-profile geometric form that respects the visual character of the site. The structure is organized into distinct spaces for different activities, encouraging interaction with the sky, fjord, and mountains. At the center of it all is the greenhouse, which acts as a vibrant focal point, welcoming users into its lively atmosphere.

Material Usage and Sustainability

The project utilizes specific materials that support both aesthetic goals and sustainable practices. Glass panels and metal profiles are used extensively, allowing natural light to fill the spaces while maximizing energy efficiency in a remote setting. The greenhouse features closures that promote a smooth transition between indoor areas and the outdoors, allowing users to feel connected to nature. Additionally, wooden brises on the facade add a natural texture and help the building fit in with its surroundings.

User Experience and Flow

User experience is a central focus of the design, with careful attention paid to how people will move through the building. Vertical circulation, including elevators, is placed thoughtfully to offer views of the surrounding flora and scenery, helping users connect with the beautiful landscape outside. The entrance faces the thermal spas, providing direct access and creating a strong relationship with the existing amenities. This placement enhances the flow between the building and its visitors.

Architectural Aesthetics

The building's aesthetic is grounded in simplicity and transparency. Large windows and open spaces invite views of the natural landscape, cultivating an atmosphere of calm and openness. Walls with heat treatment ensure comfort for users, while still allowing for visual engagement with the outside. This design approach values light and connection, enriching the experience for visitors and tying the building firmly to its place in Iceland’s scenic environment.
