The Hverfjall Café is located in a remarkable mountainous area of Iceland, designed to encourage visitors to connect with nature. It functions both as a café and an educational space where individuals can appreciate the region's natural features. The design revolves around creating a harmonious relationship between the indoor environment and the scenic views outside, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Architectural Features

A prominent aspect of the Hverfjall Café is the all-around glass observatory, which invites natural light and fresh air into the area. The clear glass facade enables unobstructed views of the Hverfjall volcano, enhancing the connection to the landscape. This openness allows visitors to feel part of their surroundings, making the café not just a place to relax, but also a spot to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Layout and Circulation

Inside the café, the layout includes a central lounging area that provides a space for relaxation and observation. Above, the mezzanine level hosts the Hverfjall Volcano Exhibit. This area showcases informational brochures and interactive screens to educate visitors about the geological features of the locale. By integrating learning into the café experience, visitors gain a deeper understanding of the natural environment surrounding them.

Material Selection

Materials used in the design reflect an intent to maintain a close relationship with nature. Thermally treated lumber is chosen for the walls, offering both durability and a sustainable option. Exposed stone flooring adds a durable and textured surface that connects the café to the geological context of the region. Operable glass windows allow for controlled airflow and enhance views, providing flexibility in how the spaces can be experienced.

Interior Ambiance

The interior environment is crafted to stimulate the senses through careful design choices. Circulation paths are designed with dark wood elements and colorful finishes, creating an inviting atmosphere. LED lighting complements these materials, adding warmth and distinction to the space. The combination of these elements creates a lively setting that echoes the unique characteristics of the natural landscape, making visitors feel engaged and comfortable.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
