The Volcano Museum is located in the Hverfjall volcano area of Iceland and serves a vital educational role in showcasing the region’s geological features. The design emphasizes a strong connection to the surrounding landscape through simple geometric shapes that reflect the natural contours of the area. This approach enhances both the visual quality and usability of the museum, guiding visitors through its spaces.

Design Concept

The concept is inspired by the wild nature of the Hverfjall region. A rectangular main building merges with a glass lobby and a circular atrium, creating a clear relationship between the museum and its environment. This arrangement not only appeals visually but also aids in guiding visitors as they move around the space.

Entrance and Lobby

Visitors first enter a glass lobby that provides expansive views of the Hverfjall volcano. This area creates a transition between the outside world and the museum interior. The use of glass allows natural light to flood in, reinforcing the connection to the scenic landscape. The lobby prepares guests for the experiences that lie ahead, fostering a sense of place and curiosity.

Exhibition Hall Design

The exhibition hall is located below ground level and accessed through a sculptural staircase. This descent mimics the experience of entering a volcanic crater, adding to the thematic engagement with the geology of the region. The hall features a glass-roof atrium that invites sunlight while creating a reflective and contemplative atmosphere. Surrounding monolithic walls provide structure and intimacy, making it suitable for displaying geological artifacts and educational materials.

Central Atrium

At the center of the building is the circular atrium, serving as a focal point that reinforces the design's overall coherence. This feature mirrors the shape of the volcano's crater and connects different areas of the museum. The arrangement encourages smooth movement and fluid interaction among visitors, enhancing the experience as they explore the exhibits that celebrate the volcanic landscape.

The careful consideration of shapes and space culminates in a design that meets functional needs while inviting guests to appreciate the surrounding natural beauty.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
