Glass Facades and Greenhouses Overlooking Hverfjall Crater Dining Experience

Project in-detail

Set against the dramatic backdrop of Hverfjall Crater, the combination of glass facades and integrated greenhouses creates a dynamic restaurant experience that merges culinary offerings with an immersive connection to the local landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Greenhouses provide fresh produce directly for the restaurant’s menu.
02
The design integrates a pathway that enhances visitor engagement with the cultivation process.
03
Glass facades facilitate natural light while connecting interior and exterior spaces.
04
The restaurant’s elevated position offers panoramic views of the volcanic landscape.
05
Sustainable practices are embedded in both the design and operational aspects.

The site is located in the northern region of Iceland, characterized by the dramatic landscape of Hverfjall crater. This area was formed by volcanic activity over 2,500 years ago, creating a unique backdrop for the restaurant. The design focuses on connecting the built environment with the natural surroundings, aiming to create a space that serves both as a dining venue and an educational experience. The concept highlights the importance of sustainability and encourages an appreciation for the local ecosystem.

Design Concept

At the heart of the design is a pathway that starts from the parking area and rises to the top of an artificial hill. This pathway leads visitors through greenhouses and ultimately to the restaurant, which offers stunning views of the volcanic terrain. The journey through the project is intended to immerse guests in the growing process of food, enhancing their understanding while providing a memorable encounter with the land.

Greenhouses as Central Features

Greenhouses play a vital role in the overall design. They are positioned prominently, acting as vibrant spaces that not only provide fresh produce for the restaurant but also create a lively contrast against the stark landscape. These structures allow visitors to observe the organic growth process, making the experience educational as well as enjoyable. The design emphasizes the importance of local food sources and sustainability, aligning with contemporary environmental concerns.

Material Choices

Expansive glass façades are a significant material choice in the design, bringing in natural light and offering clear views of the landscape. This use of glass helps blend indoor and outdoor spaces, inviting the surrounding environment into the interiors. The transparency of the façades showcases the beauty of the Icelandic scenery while drawing attention to the changing atmosphere throughout the day.

Interior Atmosphere

The dining area is designed with a focus on comfort, creating a relaxed environment for various dining experiences. Its layout prioritizes views of the crater, allowing guests to feel connected to the natural surroundings. The arrangement supports both intimate family meals and quiet moments over coffee. The overall design fosters a sense of belonging, where the interior complements the impressive landscape outside.
