The integration of a glass house and vegetation creates a microclimate that enhances the experience of Hverfjall's stark landscape while serving as a café and exhibition space for visitors.
5 key facts about this project
01
The design includes a rock yard that visually connects the indoor and outdoor environments.
02
A glass house captures solar energy, enhancing thermal comfort year-round.
03
Vegetation integrated into the structure adds humidity to the otherwise dry climate.
04
The building's orientation maximizes sunlight exposure on the south side.
05
Irregular stairs in the outdoor area promote dynamic exploration of the landscape.

The Volcano Path is situated in the unique landscape of Hverfjall, characterized by its cold climate and remote environment. This design serves multiple purposes as a pathway, cafeteria, and exhibition space, inviting users to contemplate the surrounding scenery. The concept encourages exploration and interaction, allowing visitors to connect with both the natural and built elements of the area.

Design Integration

The geometry resembles a winding route, guiding visitors through different spaces. This layout promotes individual exploration and personal experiences, providing freedom to navigate as desired. A rock yard is an important feature, visible through large windows, which links the indoors to the outdoor environment. This visual connection to nature enhances the overall experience of the site.

Climate Responsive Strategy

Attention to local climate shapes the building's design. With summer temperatures reaching as high as 47 degrees and equinox averages around 24 degrees, the south-facing side is strategically placed to capture sunlight. This orientation not only improves thermal comfort but also makes the space pleasant for users any time of the year.

Glass House and Microclimate

A key aspect of the design is the glass house, which offers shelter and captures solar energy. It serves to warm the interior while also integrating vegetation that adds humidity to the environment. This inclusion helps to create a microclimate, enhancing the atmosphere for visitors and reinforcing the connection to the natural surroundings.

The thoughtful connection is evident in the large openings that allow light to fill the interior. This design choice creates an uninterrupted dialogue between the natural landscape and the interior spaces, enriching the overall experience for those who visit.

Vancouver Tall Challenge: Building Higher Downtown

`
Competition organisers

The Vancouver Tall Challenge: Building Higher Downtown is an international architecture competition organized by Buildner in collaboration with the City of Vancouver and the University of British Columbia’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA). The competition invites architects, designers, planners, and creative thinkers to explore innovative approaches to tall buildings in Vancouver’s downtown core, focusing on sustainability, livability, urban density, public space, and the city’s strong connection to nature. As Vancouver continues to grow, participants are challenged to rethink how vertical development can enhance urban life and contribute to a more vibrant, inclusive, and resilient city identity.

The competition offers a total prize fund of $15,000 CAD, with winning proposals selected by an international jury of architects, planners, academics, and city-building professionals. Key dates include the final registration deadline on October 29, 2026, submission deadline on November 30, 2026, and winners announcement on January 26, 2027.
