The Z-VIP (Zero Virus Igloo Pod) addresses the urgent need for safe and temporary housing for essential workers during public health emergencies. Located in urban settings like New York City, the design aims to provide convenient living spaces that prioritize health, comfort, and easy access to services. Its overall concept combines a secure and portable solution with sustainable practices, creating a living environment suited for times of heightened health risks.

Design Structure

The layout features a dual-dome system. The inner dome, made primarily of glass, allows sunlight to enter and helps inactivate airborne viruses. This design choice promotes the health and safety of residents while maintaining a connection to the outside world. The presence of natural light enhances the living experience within the pod.

The outer dome consists of segments that serve multiple purposes. It captures solar energy and collects rainwater, addressing the need for renewable resources. Additionally, it includes built-in planters that support vegetation, contributing to better air quality and fostering a healthier environment around the pod.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the Z-VIP is designed for functionality. Key amenities such as an entry checkpoint, bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and dining area, outdoor walkway, and storage are included. This organization ensures that essential needs are met in a compact space. Each area is thoughtfully placed to enhance convenience for workers who need to balance living and professional responsibilities.

Health and Safety Integration

Health and safety measures are central to the design. Upon entering, residents undergo a health check to monitor vital signs, reinforcing the focus on public health. An air filtration system on the roof continuously circulates purified air, creating a safe living space. These features reflect a deep concern for the well-being of occupants during challenging times.

Innovative Mobility

The Z-VIP is designed to operate independently from city infrastructure, reducing contamination risks. Its portable nature allows it to be relocated quickly, whether to parks, hospital parking lots, or rooftops. Once positioned, the pod connects to necessary utilities, making it a practical solution for emergency housing.

The thoughtful integration of health features, utility connections, and ecological considerations forms the foundation of the Z-VIP. Natural light floods the interior through the glass dome, creating an inviting atmosphere that supports the well-being of its occupants.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
