The Vogafjós Film Pavilion and Restaurant is located in the rugged terrain of northern Iceland, close to the Vogafjós Farm. This structure combines the functions of a cinema and a restaurant, aiming to enhance cultural experiences for visitors. The design concept captures the essence of the surrounding environment by exploring themes of contrast. Elements inspired by both volcanic and glacial features come together to create a rich and engaging space.

Architectural Concept

The design takes cues from the dramatic landscape, particularly the Hverfjall volcano, which influences the theater’s solid and imposing structure. This part of the building is dark and sturdy, reflecting the volcanic rock found in the area. The theater serves as a focal point for film presentations, but it also stands as a notable piece of architecture that roots the project in its setting.

Spatial Organization

The layout effectively separates the theater from the restaurant while ensuring both spaces feel connected. The restaurant is designed to face north, allowing views of the aurora. It features a lighter and inviting atmosphere, providing a contrast to the more substantial theater. In the area where these two volumes meet, a three-story assembly space is included, featuring a bar and a viewing deck, offering a variety of experiences for those who visit.

Material Considerations

The materials used in construction support the project’s connection to the local environment. Volcanic rock and birch wood are sourced from the region, emphasizing a commitment to sustainability and regional identity. The bio-glass used in the restaurant allows sunlight to enter the space, brightening the interiors and maintaining a strong link to the surroundings.

Design Detail

Moving through the building, visitors experience an alternating rhythm of solid and open spaces. At the top, the viewing deck provides sweeping views of the landscape, allowing guests to observe the natural beauty of the aurora overhead while enjoying the unique atmosphere of the pavilion.
