ALFHOL: The Elf's Cave Under the Stone is located between Myvatn Lake and the Hverfjall volcanic chain in Iceland. This setting features significant geological formations where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. The design aims to create a connection between the environment and its visitors, allowing them to experience the landscape's strength and size while embracing its unique charm.

Site Integration

Key geological features play an important role in the design. Grjotagja Cave, a hidden geothermal hot spring, adds a layer of intrigue and engagement. The overall layout focuses on integrating with Hverfjall, a notable black crater formed during an eruption 2,500 years ago, and the Myvatn thermal source, which offers naturally heated outdoor baths. These elements enhance the experience for visitors and draw attention to the natural beauty of the environment.

Circulation and Experience

The design includes a circulation path that guides visitors from the entrance downwards, gradually revealing views of the landscape and volcanic formations. This thoughtful design choice enhances the visitor experience by creating anticipation as they approach Grjotagja. The unfolding views invite exploration and interaction with the surrounding environment.

Functional Layout

The interior consists of various functional spaces including areas for cinema access, offices, a lobby, a kitchen, and storage. Each space is arranged to offer clear visibility of Hverfjall and its spectacular surroundings. This arrangement encourages a strong connection between the indoor areas and the vibrant landscape outside, enabling visitors to continuously engage with their surroundings.

The overall design reflects a commitment to blending with the existing natural features. The architecture responds to the landscape, allowing for a rich visitor experience. It highlights the natural forces that have shaped this area, creating spaces that encourage connection with the earth and its powerful elements. The design culminates in a cohesive flow between built and natural environments, emphasizing the remarkable qualities of the location.
