The Iceland Greenhouse Restaurant is located in the picturesque area of Mývatn, Iceland. It serves as both a dining venue and a greenhouse space where visitors can enjoy meals surrounded by nature. The design centers on a concept called the "frozen ribbon," which creates a protective cover while framing views of the striking Hverfjall volcano and the tranquil Mývatn lake. This structure connects the restaurant with the landscape, offering a unique experience for guests.

Design Approach

The layout of the restaurant is organized to create different dining experiences. It includes large communal tables that encourage social dining, intimate settings for smaller groups or families, and a bar area linked to a lounge. This variety of spaces allows guests to choose their preferred atmosphere, enhancing the overall experience while remaining close to nature.

Spatial Organization

The building adapts to the topography of the site. Social spaces are placed in the lower southern area while greenhouse elements occupy the higher northern section. This configuration minimizes disturbance to the land and optimizes natural light and views. Open staircases and vertical green walls facilitate movement through the space, integrating elements of nature within the architecture.

Materiality

The structure uses galvanized steel columns that provide stability and strength. Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) beams are included to offer warmth and a natural aesthetic. The lower façade is made of glass with aluminum framing, allowing for expansive views and abundant daylight. The upper layer is crafted from multi-wall polycarbonate sheeting, which helps manage heat and light within the building.

Sustainability Considerations

Attention to sustainability is apparent throughout the design. A geothermal heating system draws on local thermal water sources, providing an efficient way to heat the building. The restaurant also includes facilities for organic waste recycling, highlighting its commitment to environmental responsibility.

Guests are surrounded by vibrant greenery while dining, enhancing the atmosphere with a sense of peace and connection to the outdoors. This integration of nature and dining creates a remarkable setting for both locals and visitors to enjoy.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
