Constructed with timber glulam and utilizing geothermal heating, the circular structure harmonizes with its environment while providing a greenhouse that enhances the dining experience through direct engagement with food production.
5 key facts about this project
01
The greenhouse is designed with various solar zones to optimize crop growth.
02
Timber glulam construction sourced from FSC-certified forests enhances sustainability.
03
The main dining area offers uninterrupted views of Myvatn hot springs and Hverfjall Volcano.
04
A rainwater harvesting system supports efficient water management practices.
05
Large triple-glazed windows maximize natural light while blending indoor and outdoor spaces.

The Greenhouse Restaurant is located in the geothermal area of Myvatn, Iceland, known for its beautiful landscapes and natural hot springs. The design combines dining with food production, offering a space where visitors can appreciate both the food and the environment. The concept centers around a circular form that fits well within the landscape, providing a smooth connection between the inside and outside spaces. It aims to promote an understanding of the local ecosystem and the relationship between nature and food.

Structure and Spatial Organization

The layout includes a central courtyard, which is surrounded by the greenhouse and the restaurant. This arrangement allows for maximum sunlight, which is vital for the greenhouse's operations. Inside the greenhouse, different zones help grow various crops, engaging visitors in the growing process. The restaurant's main dining area is located at the northern end, providing sweeping views of the Myvatn hot springs and Hverfjall Volcano. This positioning helps create a stronger bond between diners and the scenic surroundings.

Material Choices

The building is primarily constructed using timber glulam sourced from FSC-certified forests, emphasizing sustainability. This choice supports responsible forestry and provides an appealing look to the structure. The floors are made from marble offcuts, adding a distinctive texture while making use of reclaimed materials. The ceiling features pressed dyed cornflower panels, creating an inviting interior atmosphere that reflects a connection to nature.

Environmental Strategies

The design incorporates several strategies to enhance sustainability. A passive ventilation system, partially assisted by mechanical means, helps maintain comfortable indoor conditions without excessive energy use. The heating system draws energy from the nearby hot spring, utilizing local resources efficiently. Additionally, the project includes a rainwater harvesting tank to promote better water management.

Large triple-glazed windows are a prominent feature in the dining area, allowing ample natural light to fill the space. They frame views of the stunning Icelandic landscape, making the natural world an integral part of the dining experience. The design invites visitors to enjoy the scenery while dining, effectively blending the building with its surroundings.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
