The Aurora Greenhouse project is a multifunctional facility located in Iceland, combining a year-round greenhouse, a restaurant, and various activity spaces. The design focuses on sustainability and community involvement, highlighting the connections between food production and consumption while appreciating the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Architectural Concept

At the center of the design is the greenhouse, which acts as a focal point that invites visitors into the building. This space allows people to engage directly with the cultivation of vegetables, fruits, and other greens. Visitors can participate in the growing process, creating a hands-on experience. This approach not only promotes understanding of local food sources but also fosters a sense of community among those who gather here.

Spatial Relationships

Large glass walls are placed throughout the facility to offer stunning views of the Hverfjall volcano and Mývatn Nature Baths. These openings let in natural light and create a strong connection between the inside and outside. This relationship with nature enhances the experience of users and serves as a constant reminder of the beautiful landscape that surrounds them.

Sustainability Features

A geothermal heat exchange system is utilized to maintain stable temperatures within the greenhouse year-round. This feature demonstrates a commitment to renewable energy sources. Alongside this, a heat recovery system helps recirculate warm air to improve energy efficiency. These systems highlight careful planning in responding to the needs of the environment while being mindful of energy conservation.

Structural Considerations

The building is supported by piles to effectively manage the challenging terrain of the site. This foundation method ensures stability while allowing for air and water flow beneath the structure. The first-floor ceiling is designed with wooden trusses, which provide necessary support and add a natural feel to the interior. Movable window louvers are included to regulate light, allowing the space to adapt to Iceland's ever-changing weather.

The Aurora Greenhouse exemplifies how a facility can balance functionality, sustainability, and a connection to nature, creating an enriching atmosphere for all who visit.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
