"Almost Scenic" is a residence designed for two painters and their families, located beside a tranquil lake. The overall concept of the design focuses on the balance between being part of nature and having a space for personal reflection. The home aims to create an inspiring environment where art and family life can thrive together.

Spatial Arrangement

The plan features a square layout that is rotated to encourage movement throughout the home. Two staircases connect the different levels and create an easy flow from communal spaces to private areas. Shared areas like the entry porch and the central gathering space promote family interaction. In contrast, the private zones placed at opposite corners provide quiet spaces for personal retreat. This careful arrangement addresses the unique needs of the resident artists while accommodating family life.

Connection to Nature

Large openings throughout the design enhance the link between inside and outdoors. The windows allow views of the lake, trees, and changing seasons, inviting the beauty of nature into daily life. Each corner of the house is oriented to offer sightlines that emphasize the surrounding landscape. This integration ensures that the natural environment remains an essential part of everyday living, creating a strong connection to the site.

Material Selection

Materials play an important role in shaping the identity of the residence. Pre-fabricated aluminum panels and a self-adhered membrane are used along with glue laminated timber for structural support. Reused wood panels enhance the ceiling, while wood flooring creates a warm atmosphere throughout the various spaces. The sturdy reinforced concrete foundation offers durability, while insulation helps maintain energy efficiency, allowing the home to stay comfortable year-round.

Unique Design Features

The design incorporates a geothermal loop and heat pump system to promote sustainability. These features reflect a commitment to energy efficiency while ensuring a comfortable living environment. Ample windows bring in natural light and frame the picturesque views outside, adding to the appeal of the residence. This attention to detail fosters a welcoming atmosphere, allowing occupants to enjoy the beauty of nature while still having a private space to retreat to when needed.
