5 key facts about this project
Situated in the picturesque Mývatn region of Iceland, the design presents a thoughtful interaction between functionality and the natural surroundings. This structure enhances the user experience during the midwinter months while serving as a greenhouse, restaurant, and hall. The concept revolves around making the most of sunlight by utilizing the low-angle path of the sun and creating a relationship between the building and the landscape. The circular design encourages visitors to engage with both the architecture and the beauty of nature.
Functionality and Spatial Organization
The building is placed at the top of a ridge, allowing for impressive views of the environment. It is divided into four distinct areas: a floating restaurant, a pilotis ground floor, a greenhouse on the first basement level, and a hall located in the second basement. This vertical arrangement not only makes movement between spaces more efficient but also creates opportunities for interaction, enhancing the overall experience for guests.
Restaurant and User Engagement
The restaurant occupies the highest volume in the design, offering sweeping views of the Mývatn region. The space is warm and inviting, providing visitors with the choice of enjoying meals made from crops harvested on-site or using a shared kitchen for self-preparation. This combination promotes engagement, letting guests experience both the dining aspect and the agricultural elements of the design.
Greenhouse and Sustainable Practices
The greenhouse is integrated into the landscape, designed to reduce disturbances from outside elements. By sinking into the ground, it creates a stable environment for growth that effectively utilizes geothermal heat from the area. Transparency is key to the greenhouse’s function, allowing natural light to enter and support the plants' development.
Natural Elements in the Hall
In the second basement, the hall incorporates original bedrock, enhancing its connection to the surrounding landscape. Large openings in the roof allow natural light to stream in, establishing a clear relationship between the inside space and the sky. This thoughtful design element creates a peaceful atmosphere, allowing visitors to appreciate the landscape even while indoors.
The combination of light and shadow in various spaces changes throughout the day, adding depth to the experience and strengthening the bond between the architecture and its natural setting.
