The Hverfjall Coffee Shop project is located near the Hverfjall volcano in Iceland, serving the growing number of tourists attracted to this natural site. The design combines a coffee shop with an exhibition hall, creating a welcoming space that honors the area's geological significance. The concept places emphasis on flexible spaces, encouraging interaction and enhancing the overall visitor experience while harmonizing with the surrounding environment.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the building clearly distinguishes between the exhibition area and the coffee shop. The exhibition space runs lengthwise, allowing for a versatile environment that can adapt to various displays through the use of movable rails. This arrangement lets the space change according to the needs of visitors, keeping the experience fresh and engaging.

In the coffee shop, the design is open and features a grandstand for flexible furniture arrangements. This setup encourages informal gatherings among patrons. At one end, an outdoor area provides a space for meetings and conversations, establishing a connection with the natural surroundings and enriching the social atmosphere.

Sustainability Considerations

Sustainability is a key focus of the design process. The goal is to minimize resource consumption while creating an enjoyable space for visitors to relax and recharge. The approach promotes the use of local and renewable materials that are non-polluting and weather-resistant. This not only helps the environment but also supports the longevity of the building.

Energy Efficiency

The project aims for energy efficiency and relies on renewable energy sources. Photovoltaic panels supply electricity to the coffee shop, and geothermal energy from the volcanic region provides heating. Additionally, rainwater is collected from the roof for reuse, enhancing the building's self-sufficiency throughout the year.

Signage is designed to be clear and informative, assisting visitors in navigating the facility easily. Areas for information, restrooms, the exhibition center, the shop, the warehouse, the coffee shop, and offices are clearly marked. This organized layout helps support a smooth flow of movement for visitors.

Large windows at the far end of the coffee shop frame views of the Hverfjall volcano, inviting nature into the space. This design detail encourages patrons to engage with the landscape while enjoying their visit, creating a connection to the site that enhances the overall experience.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
