Geometry of White Spaces Within a Site-Specific Gathering Place

Project in-detail

Defined by its geometric roof design and a focus on storytelling, the structure integrates with the surrounding landscape to serve as a community gathering space.
5 key facts about this project
01
The roof design is inspired by aerial perspectives, enhancing the visual connection with the landscape.
02
The structure uses cross-laminated timber panels to improve sustainability and structural integrity.
03
Charred wooden shingles are employed for both aesthetic appeal and fire resistance.
04
The layout incorporates communal spaces that encourage interaction among visitors.
05
Natural light is maximized through carefully placed openings, enhancing the interior experience.

The design presents an exploration of how architecture can relate to its natural surroundings. Located in a landscape marked by its stark features and sparse vegetation, the structure aims to capture the essence of the site’s history while ensuring a respectful presence in the environment. Its function is to create a focal point that invites visitors to engage with both the building and the landscape around it.

Conceptual Framework

At the heart of the design is the goal of telling a story through the structure itself. This narrative is anchored in a deep respect for the existing landscape, shaping the building's form to blend with the natural terrain. Careful positioning allows the design to enhance visibility and accessibility for travelers. The structure serves as a reference point, guiding visitors through the natural features of the area.

Engagement with Landscape

The design embraces the raw scenery and barren landscape instead of hiding it. Architectural elements respond to these characteristics, using shapes that echo the environment. The roof design, seen from an aerial view, underscores the connection between the building and its surroundings, creating a visual relationship that invites contemplation.

Functional Layout

The organization of spaces within the structure focuses on practical use and accessibility. Various areas such as workspaces, cafes, and common gathering spots are integrated into the layout, fostering interaction among visitors. The attention to flow and circulation highlights an intent to create a welcoming atmosphere, encouraging communal engagement.

Architectural Language

A straightforward architectural language defines the structure, emphasizing clarity and simplicity. This approach avoids complicated designs but remains engaging. Clean lines and minimal forms enhance the usability of the space, while also inviting exploration. Each element is designed to connect with both the building’s interior and the broader environment.

The project culminates in a striking entry feature that frames the entrance, guiding visitors into a space that blends warmth with openness, creating a smooth transition from the outside world into a thoughtfully designed environment.
