The Hverfjall Volcano Coffee Shop is located near the Hverfjall volcano in Iceland. This building functions as a visitor center, offering a space for travelers to rest and enjoy refreshments while being surrounded by the unique natural environment. The design uses a circular form, aiming for energy efficiency and a harmonious relationship with the landscape.

Form and Function

The circular shape of the coffee shop helps minimize surface area, which reduces energy loss. This approach not only supports sustainability but also creates an inviting space. The design allows for easy flow and connection between different areas within the coffee shop, making it user-friendly for visitors.

Openings and Light Interaction

Carefully placed openings enhance the building’s connection to its surroundings. They frame views of the landscape while allowing natural light to enter, creating a pleasant atmosphere inside. By utilizing these openings, the coffee shop stands out during the day while becoming a source of light at night, guiding visitors as they navigate the dark.

Dual Functionality and Impact

The building serves two main purposes: it offers a resting place for travelers and acts as a landmark in the wilderness. This dual role ensures that the coffee shop is a valuable stop along the journey, providing both comfort and a sense of safety. The thoughtful layout encourages visitors to engage with the environment, whether through a cup of coffee or a moment of reflection.

Even after sunset, the coffee shop remains a notable feature of the landscape. The patterns of light that spill from its interior create a warm glow, bridging the gap between architecture and nature.
