The INTERSTICE: THE CAVE TOWER is designed to blend with its surroundings while offering engaging experiences for visitors. Located in a landscape marked by geological features, it acts as a gateway to Kvennagja and Karlagja caves. The overall concept revolves around harmonizing built spaces with nature, encouraging exploration and interaction among visitors.

Site Layout

The layout includes several important areas such as entrances to Kvennagja and Karlagja caves, areas for visitors to rest, and gathering decks. This careful arrangement promotes an easy flow of movement, allowing visitors to navigate through different functional spaces smoothly. Public walkways connect these areas, making them accessible and enhancing the experience through various visual and spatial connections.

Architectural Form

The cave tower showcases distinctive geometric shapes that relate to the natural landscape. These forms create varied viewing experiences and highlight the contrast between the building and its surroundings. Observation decks are thoughtfully placed at different heights, allowing visitors to appreciate the landscape from multiple angles, encouraging deeper connections to the natural environment.

Material Considerations

The construction incorporates specific materials that support the design while ensuring functionality. Insulated glazing units with two panes filled with argon improve energy efficiency and comfort. Precast concrete panels add stability and facilitate faster construction. Heavy metal framing ensures durability, while vapor barriers and waterproofing layers protect the structure from environmental factors.

Functional Spaces

Inside the tower, spaces are designed to meet a variety of visitor needs. Areas for ticketing, visitor information, and rest are integrated smoothly. Exhibition and display spaces provide educational opportunities, while a café and gift shop create welcoming places for social interaction. This mix of functions helps visitors engage fully with what the site has to offer.

The observation deck provides wide views of the landscape, allowing visitors to connect with their surroundings. It encourages contemplation and appreciation of the geological features, making the visit memorable.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
