VeloStop is an intervention situated along the EuroVelo 6 cycling route, which spans ten European countries from the Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea. The design aims to enhance the experience of cyclists traveling this scenic path by providing safe, comfortable cabins. It combines private spaces with areas that foster community engagement. The concept draws inspiration from the hexagonal crystalline formation of smokey quartz, resulting in a structure that connects well with its natural environment while offering necessary amenities for travelers.

Geometric Form

The design showcases a six-sided geode shape that serves as both a visual and structural centerpiece. This unique form reflects the simplicity and beauty of natural shapes, creating a connection with the surrounding landscape. The hexagonal layout allows for effective spatial organization, balancing shared spaces and private areas. This promotes an enjoyable experience for users along their journey.

Functional Spaces

Inside VeloStop, the layout is designed to meet various user needs. Standard cabins feature basic outdoor preparation areas for cyclists, while deluxe units include additional amenities such as toilets and showers. This separation ensures that different levels of comfort are available, catering to the preferences of various travelers along the route.

Sustainability Features

Sustainability is a key focus of the VeloStop design, incorporating practical solutions that limit environmental impact. Solar panels, compost toilets, and systems to collect rainwater are among the features that minimize the ecological footprint. These elements not only reduce energy consumption but also align with current standards for environmentally responsible design, highlighting a commitment to caring for the surroundings.

Materiality and Local Context

The selection of materials is closely linked to the local context, emphasizing the use of products sourced from nearby. This approach builds a connection to the area, ensuring that the structures resonate with their surroundings. By choosing local materials, the design supports the local economy and contributes to a consistent look within the landscape, enhancing the overall integration of the project with its geographic setting.

Design details include integrated firepits and benches that encourage social interaction among users. These features create inviting spaces where travelers can gather and enjoy each other's company, reinforcing a sense of community while providing essential functionality in a serene environment.
