Galvanized Structure Embracing Forest Views with Elevated Wooden Pathways

Project in-detail

Galvanized steel strands form a structural framework that elegantly captures expansive forest views while wooden pathways enhance accessibility in this observation tower designed to immerse visitors in Latvia's rich biodiversity.
5 key facts about this project
01
Galvanized steel strands mimic the form of local silver birch trees.
02
The design includes multiple levels dedicated to cardinal directions for enhanced orientation.
03
Wooden pathways elevate visitors above the wet ground, ensuring safe access.
04
Operable curtain walls allow unobstructed views when needed.
05
Red spectrum lighting aids in nighttime visibility without disrupting the natural ambiance.

Ascending Glades is an observation tower located in the dense forests of Latvia. It offers visitors a unique vantage point to appreciate the area’s rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. The design aims to create an immersive experience, allowing visitors to travel through the forest while gradually revealing expansive views of the surrounding scenery. Each floor of the tower corresponds to one of the cardinal directions, helping guests understand their geographic context within the North Vidzeme Biosphere.

Structure and Materials

The tower's design features galvanized steel strands, shaped to resemble the silver birch tree, which is common in the Baltic region. This choice of material helps the structure blend into its natural surroundings while ensuring stability and durability. The framework is supported by steel pipes, creating a stable platform system that allows for safe access across its different levels.

Pathways and Accessibility

Wooden paths lead visitors through the landscape, effectively elevating them above the wet ground. This thoughtful planning encourages movement and interaction with the environment while ensuring safety. The design emphasizes accessibility, making it easy for visitors to explore the tower and its connecting pathways as they engage with the natural features of the site.

Roof and Lighting Design

The roof of the tower is pitched, a design element that lessens the load of snow and aligns with the local architectural style. The cantilevered roof extends outward, offering broad views, which supports the primary purpose of the structure as a lookout. Operable curtain walls allow visitors to connect with the outdoors, providing clear sightlines when they are open.

Lighting is an important aspect of this design. Red spectrum lights help adjust vision during the night, accommodating those who want to spend time under the stars. Overhead lights are carefully positioned for functionality while remaining unobtrusive, enhancing the experience without overwhelming the atmosphere.

Every element of Ascending Glades is carefully executed to enhance the visit. The arrangement of pathways, views, and lighting creates an environment conducive to exploration and appreciation of Latvia’s natural beauty. The design invites visitors not only to observe but also to connect with the landscape around them.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
