The Norðurljós Visitor Center is located in the black lava fields of Iceland and is designed to connect visitors with the natural surroundings. It serves as both an educational space and a quiet retreat for those interested in the unique beauty of the landscape, especially the northern lights. The design concept focuses on reflecting the region's natural features, particularly the impressive geological forms created by volcanic activity.

Architectural Form
The visitor center features a notable oval-shaped observatory hall that stands at the heart of the structure. This form represents the northern lights and blends with the surrounding landscape. The design aims to create a strong connection between the built structure and the natural world. It encourages visitors to move from the vast outside world into thoughtfully organized interior spaces.

Circulation and Spatial Experience
Visitors navigate through the building along a well-planned path that invites exploration. The circulation layout positions the observation cone to provide sweeping views of the Icelandic scenery. By making it easier for visitors to move through different areas, the design fosters interactions among them and enhances their overall experience.

Material Integration
Gabion walls are used throughout the building, contributing both to its strength and aesthetic quality. These walls are made with local materials, which highlight a commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment. By choosing materials that relate directly to the harsh terrain, the design reinforces a sense of place and connection to the lava fields.

Lighting and Atmosphere
Natural light is an important feature in the visitor center, with the design incorporating skylights and large glass windows. These elements allow changing light conditions to fill the interior, creating a pleasant atmosphere. Views of the northern sky are easily accessible, connecting visitors to the natural wonders that inspired the center's creation.

The observation cabinets create intimate settings for quiet reflection. They enable visitors to fully experience the beauty all around them while offering a peaceful place to enjoy the dramatic Icelandic landscape and the play of light from the sky.
