Constructed with gabion walls and local wood, the retreat harmonizes with its forested setting to provide a focused environment for meditation and self-reflection.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed using locally sourced stones for gabion walls, enhancing thermal insulation.
02
The design includes a central open core to maximize flexibility for various activities.
03
Rainwater harvesting is integrated into the roof, promoting sustainability.
04
Natural wood pulls moisture, creating a balanced indoor environment.
05
Positioned around existing trees, each cabin fosters direct interaction with nature.

Set in the peaceful forests of Latvia, the design focuses on creating a meditative retreat that emphasizes a strong connection between the built structure and the natural environment. The idea behind this retreat is to help individuals step away from their daily lives and engage in mindfulness practices. The design concept promotes openness and flexibility, allowing the space to be used for various activities that support reflection and relaxation.

Spatial Organization

The layout is designed to facilitate a clear, open atmosphere. By removing clutter and distractions, the retreat encourages a sense of peace. Essential functions such as the bathroom, kitchen, and sleeping areas are grouped into a central core, leaving the surrounding space open for meditation, creative expression, or quiet contemplation. Each cabin is carefully positioned around existing trees, enhancing the relationship between people and nature.

Weather Considerations

Attention to local weather conditions informs important design choices. The cabin is elevated to reduce moisture from the ground, and a gabion wall on the north side shields against cold winds. Built from local stones, this wall serves as insulation and helps maintain comfort inside. Vegetation on the east and west sides of the structure plays a dual role, absorbing rainwater while adding to the outdoor appeal and ecological balance of the site.

Material Selection

Sustainability is evident in the choice of materials. Local wood is utilized for construction, offering natural benefits such as moisture control in the interior. The roof includes a system for collecting rainwater, while an underfloor insulation setup enhances the cabin's energy efficiency throughout different seasons. Marine-grade plywood and OSB panels are used for their durability and resistance to weather changes, ensuring that the building remains robust and functional.

Design Details

Maximizing natural light is key for the design, with a large window facing south. This feature allows sunlight to warm the interior and frames views of the surrounding trees. The warmth continues inside with timber lining on the walls and hardwood flooring, creating a cozy and inviting environment. These thoughtful design elements provide a tranquil space, encouraging visitors to immerse themselves in the calm setting of the forest.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
