Gabion Walls and Earth Tones in a Semi-Sunk Wine Tasting Space

Project in-detail

A semi-sunk design with gabion walls and earthy tones frames stunning vineyard views, creating an intimate space for wine tasting.
5 key facts about this project
01
The main area features a unique circular entrance inspired by the shape of a wine barrel.
02
Gabion walls integrate the structure with the landscape while providing natural texture.
03
A semi-sunk design offers elevated views of the vineyard, enhancing visitor engagement.
04
Accessibility is ensured through a dedicated lift as the only vertical element in the layout.
05
The use of earthy tones creates a warm atmosphere that complements the rural setting.

The project creates a visitor destination that integrates wine tasting with the surrounding landscape. Located in a rural area, the design blends with its environment to provide a peaceful setting that enhances the enjoyment of both wine and nature. The objective is to create a space that encourages visitors to explore and appreciate the variety of wines while taking in stunning views of the vineyard.

Design Concept

The design uses a tiered access system, starting with a gently sloping ramp that lifts visitors from the ground level. This design not only facilitates movement but also gradually reveals the beauty of the vineyard. A short wall leads visitors toward the main space, reinforcing a clear path while connecting them to their surroundings.

Spatial Arrangement

The main area is partially buried in the ground, which allows for a hidden space that opens to impressive views on the south-west side. This thoughtful arrangement makes use of the land's natural features to create an intimate atmosphere ideal for tasting wine. A lift has been added as the only vertical element, ensuring the space is accessible to all visitors, regardless of mobility.

Entryway Dynamics

Upon entering the main area, visitors find a dark entryway that contrasts with a brighter interior. A narrow cut in the wall frames the view, intensifying the sense of curiosity as guests pass through. This circular space, inspired by the shape of a wine barrel, enhances the connection between the design and the act of wine tasting.

Interior Features

Inside the main space, there is a table, fireplace, and ocular cuts for wine bottle storage. Each feature is deliberately placed to improve the visitor experience while maintaining a consistent design theme. The space is functional throughout the year; the fireplace caters to winter visits while glass partitions can be opened during warmer months to merge indoor and outdoor areas.

Materials such as bare concrete, corten steel, and gabion walls contribute to the earthy tones and dark color palettes that resonate with the natural landscape. The combination of materials and design elements invites visitors to engage with their surroundings, creating a thoughtful atmosphere that encourages exploration and appreciation.
