5 key facts about this project
Coffee on the Rocks is a coffee shop designed to serve as a gateway to Hverfjall Volcano in Iceland. The design integrates the natural features of the volcanic landscape, creating a strong visual and physical connection to the mountain. The café is envisioned as an open, flexible space that enhances the visitor experience while celebrating the unique geology of Hverfjall.
Design Intent
The building’s form aligns carefully with Hverfjall, using geometric shapes that echo the surrounding topography. A part of the structure is positioned directly perpendicular to the volcano, functioning both as a bridge to the mountain and a landing space for those descending from the summit. This arrangement allows for expansive views and reinforces the connection between the coffee shop and the natural environment.
Site Strategy
A new driveway leads visitors from the existing road to the café, ensuring that views of Hverfjall are preserved as they approach. The car park is located at the back of the building, allowing for a clear visual relationship between the café and the volcano before visitors reach the entrance. In addition to the main entry, a bus bay is placed on the western side of the parking area, providing an opportunity to appreciate the connection between the architectural design and the volcanic landscape.
Material Reuse and Sustainability
Demolishing the existing structure allows for the reuse of essential elements, including plumbing, steel framing, and timber. Gabions made from local rock are integrated as a primary structural component. They act as retaining walls and provide support for the café, connecting the building to its geological context. This approach not only emphasizes sustainability but also promotes efficient resource management through recycling.
Interior Experience
The layout encourages smooth circulation throughout the café, reflecting the journey to Hverfjall. Key areas such as the kitchen counter, exhibition hall, and seating are designed for accessibility and adaptability. Finishing touches include recycled timber for wall linings and seating, contributing to a warm atmosphere that respects environmental considerations. A green roof enhances the integration of the building with the landscape, promoting local biodiversity.
The design ultimately results in a space that invites visitors to engage with the coffee shop, all while enjoying the captivating presence of Hverfjall Volcano.
