5 key facts about this project
The greenhouse restaurant is located in the remarkable landscape of the Hverfjall Volcano and Mývatn Lake, merging architecture with the natural world. It serves as a sustainable dining space, where a central greenhouse offers fresh produce for patrons. A tunnel connects the indoor area to the beautiful outdoor scenery. The design highlights a strong focus on sustainability and a close relationship between visitors and the environment.
Design Concept
The structure takes the form of a hollowed square, creating a distinctive relationship between inside and outside. This arrangement allows an elongated dining area that provides views of the greenhouse and the surrounding landscape. Two main axes lead visitors’ attention—one extending toward Mývatn Lake and the other directed at Hverfjall Volcano. This geographic orientation adds depth to the experience of the space.
Interior Dynamics
Inside, the layout features two heat-producing areas: the kitchen and a multi-functional hall. Together, they enhance the central greenhouse. The design promotes transparency and the flow of natural light, which fosters interactions between diners and the plants surrounding them. An elevated platform above the kitchen offers expansive views of the greenhouse, allowing guests to appreciate the agricultural practices that contribute to their meals.
Materiality
A gabion façade filled with volcanic rock is employed in the design. This element serves both a structural role and contributes to the aesthetics. It acts as a thermal mass, helping to regulate indoor temperatures and filter sunlight. The choice of materials connects the building to the local environment, and supports the sustainable goals of the restaurant.
Experiential Elements
A special walkway merges with the tunnel, giving visitors a chance to engage with the cultivation of the greens. The entrance, located at the southern end, leads directly to the Crater Axis and provides views of Hverfjall Volcano. This thoughtful integration enhances the overall experience, allowing visitors to feel a direct link to the land and the food they consume.
These design elements work together to create an environment where visitors can enjoy both a meal and the natural beauty surrounding them. The interactions between food, space, and landscape shape a unique experience within the greenhouse restaurant.
