The Kurģi Equestrian Observation Tower is located in the Vidzeme Biosphere region, serving as a viewing platform that encourages visitors to connect with the surrounding landscape. The design merges modern architectural elements with historical references unique to the area. The tower functions as both an observation point and a reminder of the rich architectural traditions present in this part of Latvia.

Foundation and Structure

At the base of the tower is a sturdy stone foundation, which is consistent with the traditional building practices in the region. This foundation provides the necessary support for the tower above, helping it withstand the elements. The use of stone ties the structure to the local history, recalling the craftsmanship found in older constructions. Above this solid base, the design shifts to lighter materials, creating a clear distinction between the foundation and the upper levels.

Upper Levels and Materiality

The upper parts of the tower are capped with a light metal mesh. This material drapes elegantly from the roof, offering a unique visual quality. The mesh allows for clear views from the observation area while serving as an infill for the railings. By incorporating this material, the design fosters a connection between the interior space and the natural environment outside, inviting visitors to appreciate the scenery.

Roof Design and Functional Features

The roof of the observation tower is a shed design that functions as an open platform. It provides shelter for those on the upper levels while creating an interesting silhouette. This roof also houses important functional elements, such as metal gabion cages that act as both fireplace and chimney. These features demonstrate a practical use of materials while maintaining an aesthetic appeal that complements the overall design.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the tower is intended to enhance the user experience. It encourages interaction with the natural landscape surrounding it, allowing visitors to fully engage with the unique setting. The careful arrangement of spaces provides an opportunity for reflection and observation, highlighting the ecological and historical significance of the region.

In the end, the combination of materials and design elements creates an observation space that acknowledges its context. The light metal mesh balances protection with transparency, fostering a sense of connection between those inside the tower and the outside world. The architecture allows for contemplation of nature while establishing a dialogue with the rich cultural heritage of the Vidzeme Biosphere.
