The Etching is designed as a workshop and living space tailored for artists and their families. It features a two-level structure, where the lower floor serves as a public area for communal activities and the upper mezzanine offers private living quarters. Positioned to take advantage of natural light, the north-facing openings provide a bright and inspiring environment essential for creative work. The overall design lays out a practical yet inviting space that reflects the needs of its users.

Design Concept

At the heart of The Etching lies the idea of a village, characterized by enclosures that foster a sense of community and security. This concept encourages interaction among residents while also providing quiet areas for individual reflection. A series of communal spaces flows into a central area, defined by a full-height fireplace, which serves as both a gathering point and an organizational element for circulation throughout the building.

Spatial Arrangement

The layout is carefully designed to alternate between shared and private spaces, which allows for a variety of activities to take place. The open-air living areas promote a sense of togetherness, while spaces for retreat are readily available. This balance supports a flexible environment, accommodating both the collaborative and solitary needs of its inhabitants.

Structural Considerations

The structure employs a frame system for the house and workshop, aligning with local building traditions. In addition, the use of blockbau for the carpentry space reinforces ties to regional construction practices while providing necessary modern functionality. These structural decisions are made with an awareness of the surrounding architectural context, ensuring that the design feels rooted in its environment.

Ecological concerns also play a role in the design. The carpentry area is constructed to support local wildlife, specifically catering to a rare bat population. This consideration reflects a broader commitment to sustainability and demonstrates an effort to harmonize the built environment with its natural surroundings.

The full-height fireplace in the central area not only contributes to the comfort of the space but also serves as a prominent feature that draws attention and brings warmth into the design.
