5 key facts about this project
01
Features glass prisms that reflect and capture changing light throughout the day.
02
Integrates seamlessly into the volcanic landscape, enhancing its natural features.
03
Includes multiple paths that guide visitors directly to the volcano's base.
04
Divides functional areas for information, relaxation, and dining experiences.
05
Prioritizes visibility of panoramic views to enrich the visitor experience.

The Hverfjall Experience project is designed to enhance the visit to Hverfjall volcano in Iceland, creating an engaging experience for visitors. The aim is to establish an alternative path that not only provides access to the volcano but also promotes interactions with the surrounding landscape. The design focuses on blending the built environment with the unique geological features of Hverfjall, encouraging exploration and appreciation of nature.

Architectural Form

The design features a collection of shapes that complement the natural curves of the volcano. These forms are both edgy and smooth, drawing attention while respecting the area's geological characteristics. This careful consideration of the landscape allows the building to fit naturally into the environment, inviting visitors to connect with the site in a meaningful way.

Functional Layout

The project includes a well-organized layout that caters to a variety of visitor needs. Multiple entry points are provided, along with parking areas for buses and cars. A network of paths leads directly to the volcano. Different zones within the building are clearly defined, consisting of an information point, cloakroom, lavatory, office, rest area, and kitchenette, as well as exhibition and café spaces. This layout helps guide visitors through the site and encourages engagement with the main themes of the experience.

Materiality and Detail

Materials chosen for this project include concrete and glass. Concrete grounds the building, with shapes that echo the natural forms of the surrounding landscape. This material enhances the connection between the architecture and environment, establishing a stable presence in the volcanic context. In contrast, glass elements allow for views of the beautiful scenery outside, facilitating a relationship between the interior and the exterior.

Visual Interaction

The northwest elevation illustrates the relationship between the solid concrete walls and the glass prisms. The unique arrangement of the prisms creates visual interest, drawing the eye from different angles. This design not only frames views of the volcano but also allows natural light to vary throughout the day, highlighting the changing beauty of the surrounding area. Each aspect of the architecture contributes to a richer appreciation for the site and the experiences it offers.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
