Framing Nature With Glass-Reinforced Concrete Panels and Panoramic Views

Project in-detail

With its glass-reinforced concrete panels framing sweeping views of Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir, and Myvatn, the center offers an educational space that connects visitors to Iceland’s diverse natural landscapes.
5 key facts about this project
01
Innovative use of glass-reinforced concrete allows for natural light entry while maintaining structural integrity.
02
Specialized framing techniques highlight views of Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir, and Myvatn.
03
Visitor pathways are designed to enhance the experience of transitioning from nature to the built environment.
04
Environmental considerations inform the orientation and layout to minimize ecological impact.
05
The building serves as a educational hub, promoting awareness of local geography and ecology.

The Visitor Center is situated at the meeting point of three notable geographical attractions: Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir, and Myvatn. The design integrates information movement, aligning the structure with the landscapes around it while ensuring an easy flow for visitors. The goal is to enhance learning opportunities and encourage a deeper connection with Iceland's distinct natural features.

Design Concept

The focus of the design is on the experiences of visitors, particularly those returning from hikes on Hverfjall. The building takes shape from the merging of three different views, achieved through gently curved walls and well-placed openings. This design allows for smooth transitions between the inside and outside, creating clear visual links to the stunning scenery.

Framing the Geography

At the heart of the design is the framing of the surrounding geographical features. Hverfjall stands as a strong visual focal point, showcasing its impressive presence and inviting visitors to connect with its beauty. The inward-sweeping frame that highlights Dimmuborgir creates a welcoming entrance, guiding people gradually into the building. This careful entry path enriches the experience as visitors move further inside.

Panoramic Views

Another important aspect is the panoramic view of Myvatn. The design highlights the area's lively colors and the steam rising from hot springs, reminding visitors of the natural elements present in the region. By presenting Myvatn as the final scene in the visitor experience, the design encourages appreciation for the ongoing relationship between the center and its surroundings.

Material Considerations

The selection of materials includes glass-reinforced concrete panels and triple glazing, which contribute to the building's function. These materials allow light to enter while ensuring insulation and stability. The thoughtful use of these elements supports the design's intent, helping the structure blend with the Icelandic environment.

Large openings in the building frame views of Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir, and Myvatn, inviting visitors to engage with the magnificent landscape.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
