02
Features a slanted green wall to educate diners on local ingredient cultivation.
03
Maximizes transparency to frame views of Hverfjall Volcano and the Northern Lights.
04

05
Promotes sustainability through integration with the natural environment.

The Umhverfi Greenhouse & Restaurant is located in a striking part of Iceland, close to the Myvatn Baths and Hverfjall Volcano. This space brings together dining and nature in a way that encourages visitors to appreciate the landscape around them. The design concept comes from the Icelandic word "Umhverfi," which translates to environment. The project focuses on connecting the interior dining space with the outside world while allowing guests to engage with local culture and ingredients.

Design Concept

The design includes two separate entrances for day and night, each creating its own atmosphere suited to the time of day. This intentional choice helps visitors experience the landscape as they arrive. The flow through these entrances enhances the connection to the environment and makes each visit unique.

Pathways and Engagement

The pathways that lead to the dining area are important for educating guests about local ingredients and showcasing the surrounding beauty. The Day Entry features a green wall that slants to capture sunlight from an open ceiling above. This design guides guests toward a framed view of Hverfjall Volcano, integrating the stunning landscape into their dining experience.

Nighttime Atmosphere

In contrast, the Night Entry includes a small reception area that slows down guest movement as they enter. The transparency of the building allows for clear views of the Northern Lights. This feature enhances the dining experience in the evening, inviting guests to connect with the wonders of the Icelandic night sky.

Materiality and Structure

While specific materials are not detailed, the emphasis on transparency points toward the use of glass in the design. This choice allows for a clear connection between the interior and the breathtaking outdoor scenery. Throughout the structure, elements are designed to frame vistas, connecting the dining experience with the natural landscape.

The thoughtful arrangement of pathways and views creates a strong relationship between the restaurant and its environment, making the surrounding landscape an important part of every meal.
