The Dimmuborgir Lava Field Visitor Center is situated within Iceland's captivating volcanic landscape and serves as a key entry point for visitors exploring the Dimmuborgir lava fields. The design focuses on blending architecture with nature, creating an inviting space that allows guests to engage with the unique geological elements. The center's design concept emphasizes the connection to the environment, using the natural shapes found in the landscape to influence its structure.

Site Integration

The building reflects the natural features of the surrounding topography, particularly drawing inspiration from the volcanic crater, which represents powerful forces of nature. Comprising three distinct forms reminiscent of the towers found in Dimmuborgir, the structure establishes a dialogue with the landscape. Visitors are guided by the design to experience notable views of the lake and the volcano, enriching their connection with the site.

Visitor Experience

Inside, the layout promotes interaction and exploration. Key spaces include a lobby, café, exhibition area, and educational facilities, all designed to enhance the visitor experience. Upon entering the center, guests are welcomed by a view of Lake Mývatn, effectively merging indoor and outdoor environments. The thoughtful arrangement of spaces also provides areas of shelter that increase comfort while maximizing panoramic views of the striking scenery.

Material Selection

The choice of materials is essential in connecting the building with its surroundings. Raw volcanic stone cladding is utilized for both the interior and exterior, reinforcing tactile ties to the local geology. The sedum roof not only promotes sustainability but also encourages local biodiversity. Anodized aluminum mullions introduce a modern element, contrasting with the natural stone while allowing plenty of light to enter through well-placed glazing.

The design of the visitor center conveys a deep respect for the natural environment, allowing visitors to experience both the architecture and the remarkable geological features of Dimmuborgir. The building stands as a thoughtful presence within the landscape, providing spaces for learning and appreciation of this unique area.
