Framed Views Through Curved Slate Design in a Vineyard Tasting Room

Raw materials are used throughout to reflect the winery's identity and local craftsmanship.

The Monte d'Oiro Wine Tasting Room is situated in the Lisbon region of Portugal, near Alenquer. This family-run winery focuses on connecting wine production with visitor experiences. It enhances the process of tasting wine while also providing educational opportunities for guests. The design aims to create a calm environment that encourages visitors to engage fully with the wines and the surrounding landscape.

Design Concept
The design highlights the need for a serene atmosphere that supports the act of wine tasting. Visitors enter through a sheltered space, which serves as a transition zone and helps them prepare for their experience. This leads to a spacious tasting area with large windows, bringing in natural light and framing the views of the vineyard. The design steers attention toward the wine, ensuring the landscape serves more as a backdrop than a primary focus.

Spatial Arrangement
The tasting room takes on a distinctive elongated and slightly curved shape that follows the contour of the site. This approach adds visual interest while allowing visitors to enjoy an uninterrupted view of the Monte d'Oiro winery branch. By integrating the building with its surroundings, the design reflects a thoughtful connection to the landscape. Features like a pitched roof and smaller volume elements align with local architectural styles.

Material Composition
Material choices play a key role in establishing the project's connection to its environment. The walls are made from a slate tile cladding system and brickwork, providing both durability and a connection to the site. The roof is covered with slate tiles and treated with roof boarding, ensuring it performs well in various weather conditions. Inside, a parquet floor, along with mortar and concrete, further establishes a local character.

Experiential Quality
The design emphasizes sensory experience through the use of raw and natural materials. This choice helps evoke the essence of the winery and its surroundings. Window structures are designed like frames, bringing the outside landscape into focus while ensuring that the wine remains the main attraction. This detail adds to the overall experience, inviting visitors to connect meaningfully with the wines of Monte d'Oiro.
