Framed Views of Hverfjall With Cor-Ten and Lava-Crete Pathways

Project in-detail

05
The design promotes a deeper connection to the natural environment of Hverfjall.

The Crossroads project is located at the peak of Hverfjall and aims to improve the hiking experience for visitors. The design focuses on elevating the existing hiking path to create a new viewpoint from which to enjoy the surrounding landscape. Two distinct pathways guide hikers through a curated journey, each with framed views that enhance their connection to the natural environment.

Pathway Design

The pathways are arranged to lead visitors along a carefully planned route. Elevating the hiking path allows for a more meaningful interaction with the scenery. Each pathway offers opportunities for exploration, inviting hikers to engage more fully with their surroundings as they move along the trail.

Interactive Intersection

At the center of the design is an intersection that allows visitors to meet and interact. This junction provides a restful spot where people coming from different directions can encounter one another. By facilitating these interactions, the design promotes a sense of community among hikers and enriches their overall experience in the landscape.

Material Use

Two materials are central to the project: cor-ten steel and lava-crete. Cor-ten steel is known for its strength and natural weathering qualities. This material develops a distinctive patina over time, helping it blend with the rugged environment of Hverfjall. Lava-crete, which combines concrete with volcanic rock, reflects the unique geological features of the area and ties the design to its setting.

Visual Framing

The wall panels along the pathways are crafted to frame views at different heights, enhancing the visual journey of visitors. This thoughtful design encourages people to pay attention to the beauty around them, emphasizing the relationship between the constructed elements and the natural landscape. As hikers travel along the paths, they encounter a series of carefully composed vistas, making their experience rich and memorable.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
