Fractal Geometry and NZ Redwood Create a Space for Meditation and Connection

Project in-detail

Utilizing the principles of fractal geometry and constructed with NZ Redwood, the design serves as a meditation space that fosters personal reflection and communal connection.
5 key facts about this project
01
Fractal geometry forms the basis of the structure’s design.
02
Constructed primarily with NZ Redwood for durability and sustainability.
03
Features a tetrahedral seating arrangement to enhance group meditation.
04
Utilizes natural light through strategically placed outward-opening windows.
05
Incorporates local sheep wool insulation for improved energy efficiency.

The SOUL NAVE integrates spiritual philosophy with geometric design. Located in a peaceful environment ideal for meditation, the building serves as a portal for exploring universal energy. The design is based on the concept of fractalization, aiming to elevate consciousness by channeling information through its complex shapes.

Design Concept
-
The form of the SOUL NAVE takes inspiration from pyramid structures, which have long been associated with higher consciousness. By using geometric shapes, the design emphasizes the connection between individual experiences and universal knowledge. Users are invited to meditate and engage in self-discovery through the activation of the merkaba, facilitating a deeper connection to their inner selves.

Materiality
-
Material choice plays an important role in the project. The exterior features NZ Redwood timber cladding protected by a black tint, enhancing its durability and visual quality. The use of local sheep wool insulation reflects a commitment to sustainability while improving energy efficiency. Additionally, plant-based materials supplement the wooden components, aligning the building with environmentally friendly practices.

Spatial Configuration
-
The design has a modular layout consisting of 64 equilateral triangles arranged within its triangular faces, allowing for efficient construction. Each triangle can be developed separately, contributing to a unified design that performs well functionally. The outward-opening windows invite natural light inside, creating an atmosphere conducive to reflection and meditation. These windows also establish visual connections with the outside world, merging the interior and exterior environments.

Collective Experience
-
The SOUL NAVE emphasizes group engagement with its tetrahedral seating arrangement, which is designed to enhance the collective meditation experience. This configuration activates individual merkabas and fosters shared spiritual journeys, promoting a sense of community among participants. The layout is central to the design's purpose, guiding energy flow within the space and fostering a harmonious environment for exploration and connection.

A notable design detail involves the interplay of light and shadow created by the triangular surfaces, which adds a spiritual quality to the interior space.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
