The Dragon Spine architectural project is an ambitious skyscraper located in Hong Kong, designed to enhance urban living by blending functional workspace elements with residential and public areas. The project seeks to redefine the traditional approach to skyscraper design by emphasizing fluidity, connectivity, and sustainability within an urban environment.

The building’s design incorporates a unique structural arrangement, distributing essential services such as elevators and mechanical systems along the periphery. This layout allows for a more visually dynamic facade and maximizes usable interior space. The design approach is inspired by organic forms, with both aesthetic and functional elements aimed at promoting user interaction with the surrounding environment.

Innovative Structural Approach
A fundamental feature of the Dragon Spine project is its innovative structural approach. By placing the core structural elements externally, the building encourages natural light penetration and enhanced ventilation, key factors in urban architecture. The design includes rotating floor plates, which optimize wind flow and create outdoor terraces that double as green spaces. This configuration not only offers residents and workers seamless access to nature but also contributes to the building's energy efficiency.

Mixed-Use Development
The Dragon Spine is designed as a mixed-use facility, accommodating various functions including offices, residential spaces, and communal areas. Each floor plan is tailored to promote collaboration and adaptability, showcasing layouts such as "Coexist Office Plan" and "Micro Office Plan." These distinct configurations cater to diverse working styles, fostering innovative workplace dynamics. Moreover, the inclusion of public spaces enhances community engagement, making the building an integral part of the urban fabric.

Sustainability Features
Sustainability is a core component of the Dragon Spine project. The inclusion of green roofs, vertical gardens, and carefully designed outdoor terraces aims to reduce the building's environmental footprint. These features promote biodiversity and contribute to improved air quality in the densely populated area. Additionally, the architectural design strategically reduces heat gain, thereby minimizing reliance on artificial cooling systems.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
